With today’s trip to the library, my Dewey’s 24-Hour Readathon pile is ready for Saturday!
For those not interested in squinting at the photo, the titles are:

- The Story of the Lost Child by Elena Ferrante
- Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay by Elena Ferrante
- We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler (I also have this one on audio for when I need to feed my cat but don’t want to waste any valuable reading time not making progress on a book)
- The Likeness by Tana French
- In the Woods by Tana French
- A Trumpet in the Wadi by Sami Michael
- She’s Not There by Jennifer Finney Boylan
- The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi
- Drinking: A Love Story by Caroline Knapp
I estimate that I’ll realistically get through one and a half or maybe two of these books. But there’s nothing wrong with dreaming big with the TBR pile!
Now, it’s called Dewey’s 24-Hour Readathon, but I’ll let you in on a little secret: I’m not planning to read for the whole twenty-four hours. I’ll read all day, but I’m old enough to know that there are few things that are worth pulling an all-nighter. Plus, my now-eleven-year-old slept for a total of about thirty-seven hours during her first three years, and I’m pretty sure I’m still sleep-deprived from that.
The readathon begins at 8am in my time zone, but I hope to start two hours early and go until about 9pm, almost continuously. Then I’ll go to bed and get up at 5am to put in another three hours before the official end time. An eighteen-hour readathon wouldn’t be too shabby.
Then I have the rest of Sunday to recover. Maybe I’ll read a little bit.
I’m playing around with some podcasting/audio stuff, and so I made an audio recording of today’s post.
I’ve got several ideas for how to improve the recording already (not least of which is actually reading every title in the book list. Who edited this thing, anyway?), but I’m interested in how it sounds from outside of my own head and getting a sense for where I should put my efforts as I climb this learning curve. So, let me know what you think. Does the addition of audio enhance the blog? Detract from it? Or is it neutral?

Oh, those Tana French books look good! I never read any of her books, but they’re on my list. Have fun with the readathon. I am not brave enough to attempt it. Maybe in a few years, when the small kid is older and less demanding of my time.

I’d never read any of her books, either, and I can’t remember how I found out about them. I read the first ten pages of In the Woods for my sprint this morning, and I found it intriguing and not like I expected it at all.
I tried the readathon in April, and it worked only because I had very low expectations. This time, I’ve kicked the rest of the family out of the house. I’ve already gotten more reading done this time than last time, although now that I’ve let the Internet distract me, who knows how the rest of the day is going to progress.

I always love hearing another blogger’s voice, enjoyed the recording.
And maybe I’ll dedicate next Saturday to reading too! I clicked on the link and won’t join in formally, but depending on what my kids are doing I might just spend most of the day reading in a very different timezone to you 🙂

I’m glad I’m not the only one who enjoys hearing what the voices behind the words I read online (or in books or, long ago, in newspapers) sound like.
