Pink Just Fits Better

I think my favorite resolution this month is the keeping track of cuteness resolution. Not only does it help me dwell on the positive parts of my days with the kids, it also gives me something to blog about when I don’t have a long-form blog post in the works.

Here’s some cuteness for you:

◊ Someone has taught my 19-month-old son to say, “Hey, baby!” He’s been saying it all day.

◊ Soccer starts next week and my daughter grew out of her cleats over the winter. We were trying on new ones in the store today. She chose two pair, identical in every way except for color, to try on. She tried the black ones first, and based on how she walked in them (once she started walking normally rather than high-stepping as though tromping through mud with a sour look on her face) and how they felt when I pressed at the toe, they seemed to fit fine. But my daughter didn’t agree.

“These don’t feel right, Mommy.”

“How don’t they feel right, Honey?”

“They’re too loose in the toes. The right one is too loose and the left one is too tight.”

I adjusted the laces, and they still didn’t feel right. We had the guy re-size her foot, and he confirmed that 12 was, in fact, the right size for her to be trying. Warning her that the pink ones were the same as the black ones, I asked if she wanted to try on the pink ones.

I’d barely gotten them tied when she stood up, smiled hugely, and said, “These fit great, Mommy!”

I made a half-hearted attempt to talk her into the black ones by telling her that the pink ones would get dirty quickly and not look as pretty, but in the end, I let her get the pink ones. Clearly pink shoes fit better than black ones.

In the car afterwards I mentioned that one of the reasons I wanted her to get the black shoes was that her brother would be more likely to want to wear the black ones when he grew into them than the pink ones.

“You haven’t even asked him if he wants to wear the pink ones,” she said.

In the rear-view, I could see my son shaking his head while saying, “No, no, no, no!”

“Looks like he doesn’t want to wear the pink ones,” my daughter said, laughing.

That’s the cuteness I have for today. I’ll see about collecting more cuteness in the coming days, but I’ll try to pace my cuteness posts so you’re not overwhelmed.
