What Do You Think About Daylight Saving Time?

Time change at the start of Daylight Saving Time

From the comments I see on Facebook, Daylight Saving Time appears to be universally despised, at least by parents of school-aged children. We homeschool, and I still dislike DST. It just knocks everything off-kilter for a week (or more) twice a year.

Got me to wondering if those who love it are underrepresented on Facebook.

I LOVE Love love spring forward. I get all excited about the days getting longer and lighter. I love all things spring because it gets me closer to summer. And, if I’ve ever had a to make a life goal it would be simple: endless summer. As an awesome bonus my kids start sleeping until 7! We never have any trouble on the bedtime end because they’re always exhausted and often ready for sleep long before we can manage dinner and teeth brushing. Ask me this question in the fall and I’ll tell you I hate it. My old neighbors even complained that my kids woke too early and I just told them it would be better in the spring.

So, do you like springing forward because it signifies the move towards summer, or do you like the moving of the time itself? Would you be just as happy if the time never shifted at all (as long as it stayed the same time as DST all year so your kids slept later)?

Even without the changing of the clocks the sun would set later pretty soon. I think I like the clock change because it seems to give my life a sudden burst of energy. I feel more productive already (good thing since I’ve got a zillion things to accomplish in the next six months). This is all going to change as we move to lower latitudes where we’ll experience 6am sunrises and 6pm sunsets for as long as we stay in the tropics. I think the day ending early will be a little hard but I’m sure we’ll adjust.

I admit, I do like the clock change in the fall for the same reason—it gives me a burst of energy. I don’t know why it is the fall change would give me a burst of energy and the spring change wouldn’t. Except that the spring change just makes me feel like I’m operating an hour behind schedule (it’s 9:30 already?! It seemed like it was only 8:30!). Do you think that you’ll be more in tune with the movement of the sun and less in tune with the clock when you’re in the tropics? I know I don’t mind turning in with the sun when I’m camping, and I think it’s partially because the clock time doesn’t matter so much.

I do have to qualify my vote by saying that I do like the extra hour of light in the evening but I dislike waking up in the dark again, suddenly. Those things are my selfish concerns and have nothing to do with my kids.

Funny that I hadn’t considered that people with kids might also dislike waking up when it’s dark. That likely says something about my children’s wake-up times…
