Weekly Photo Challenge: Opportunity

This is my photographic response to this week’s photo challenge by The Daily Post. I like taking photos, especially for this type of challenge. I find it leads me to see the world differently. And seeing the world differently is something I always find enriching.

This week’s challenge was a difficult one for me. I decided to post pictures that represent the results of opportunity, rather than the opportunity itself. I usually prefer to let the photos stand on their own, but I’m including a little more explanation with these just because I don’t think it’s necessarily clear why they exemplify “Opportunity” to me.

Maine State Law: No Excuses

I know they mean that wearing your seat belt is Maine State Law, but it looks like the law is against excuses. I found this unreasonably hilarious. I thought about how difficult it would be to avoid breaking the “no excuses” law.

“But officer…”

“That’s it. We’re taking you in.”

At any rate, it exemplifies opportunity because I was taking the photo from a moving car and had to wait for just the right opportunity to get it to come out right.

Sock Monkey. I knew when I let my daughter paint the face, the monkey was going to look freaky. Or rather, freakier.

One of the optional activities for my daughter’s history lesson today was to make a monkey out of an old sock. My husband happened to have an old sock that was a) slated to be tossed out, and b) clean. We seized the opportunity to make a really freaky-looking monkey that only tangentially related to the lesson about the Egyptian Middle Kingdom (apparently, one of the things that Nubia used to trade with Egypt was monkeys. That was before Egypt conquered Nubia, presumably for better access to monkeys. And to gold).

I’ve included this photo just because it’s the most “artistic” of the lot. Our sock monkey is full of beans. These beans. Which we happened to have in the cupboard for the past three years, just waiting for the opportunity to be used as monkey filling and math manipulatives.

We could probably recycle the idea for an American history lesson. We could probably even use the same beans.

Thanks for visiting! Yes, good lighting is hard to come by in our current home, so I guess the fact that I caught it is another example of “opportunity.”
