Weekly Photo Challenge: Summer

This is my photographic response to this week’s photo challenge by The Daily Post. I like taking photos, especially for this type of challenge. I find it leads me to see the world differently. And seeing the world differently is something I always find enriching.

In North Carolina, I had a little container garden on the balcony off of my apartment. I grew Celebrity tomatoes and a three-foot-tall habañero bush and Thai basil and a decorative sweet potato. It was great to have a little mostly-edible jungle through the sliding glass doors from my kitchen, but the most awesome part was fresh-off-the-vine tomatoes. There’s something about those super-fresh tomats that just tastes like summer to me. I didn’t have much luck growing tomatoes in California, but I grew them every summer we were in Utah. Now we’ll see how the tomatoes grow in Massachusetts.

I guess peonies are really more spring than summer, but because the previous owners of our home did a fantastic job with the perennials and self-seeding annuals in our yard, we get to see a new range of colors every week or two. I’m anticipating new floral surprises throughout the season. I’m especially curious about what appears to be two giant asparagus spears that shot up last week. I’m guessing they’re not asparagus, but that’s as far as I’ve gotten with identifying them.
