When my younger child turned two, we switched his car seat from rear-facing to front-facing. Although this child didn’t hate rear-facing as his elder sibling had, we still anticipated that he would enjoy the change of perspective.
The first ride after the switch was down a residential street at 25 mph and involved our son shouting from the back seat, “Too fast! Too fast!”
He got used to it quickly, but that first ride made me wonder if I’d made a horrible mistake.
These days, that child is 16, and for the past several months has been learning to drive himself. When it’s just him and me, I sit in the passenger seat, but when his dad is with us, I let the calmer parent sit in front, while I sit in the back yelling, “Too fast! Too fast!”
And so we come full circle.
